Are you starting to think about backyard ideas for your property this spring?

How about a backyard pond, stream or waterfall?

As I write this morning, the cold icy grip of Mother Nature is as firm as ever. Most of us understand the absolute necessity to live in the moment however the distant promise of warm winds and disappearing snow is a distraction that’s very hard to avoid.

I love all four of our Canadian seasons but spring time with its excitement, it’s promise and all of its possibilities is very hard to beat. As ice and snow recede and lawn and garden begins to peek through, I am intrigued, but it’s my ponds, yes my ponds that really captivate me. Flowers trees and grasses come alive in a more subtle way when compared to a pond. Terrestrial climates are like competent, perfectly timed backup singers to the stars of the show, the aquatic headliner. Of course I’m completely biased but when ice recedes and frogs, ducks, geese, and my wonderful fish swim out to greet me, well it’s indescribably cool. It’s cool. An old term but it seems to fit so nice when I try to describe many aspects of water gardening.

Ponds are alive, they vibrate and pulse with every facet of natures amazing symphony. I couldn’t live without them I am part of them they are part of me. In the very near future thousands, perhaps millions of Canadians will finally be able to “stroll the grounds” of their properties all across what used to be a very frozen country.

Searching for backyard ideas, I hope they think of a backyard pond. The concept of inviting Mother Nature to spend some time with you is a very good one. Until spring finally arrives we will have to be content with our memories and our day dreams.
